This course is free and open to everyone! No need to call in advance, just show up on the Saturday you have chosen and take part in this informative session to help you be successful in the testing process at the Sacramento Police Department. The Police Department is located at 5770 Freeport Blvd. between Claudia Drive and 35th Avenue, south of Fruitridge Road on the west side of the street.

Police Academy - Basic Course - Intensive
The Sacramento Police Department Academy, in affiliation with Los Rios Community College, conducts intensive format classes. The P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy is 24 weeks in length and provides approximately 952 hours of training. (P.O.S.T. minimum 664 hours.) Intensive Academy classes regularly begin in March, July and November.


Firearms Training and Arrest-Control-Baton Procedures
Sacramento graduates consistently rate high on the P.O.S.T. Proficiency Exam. The training is among the most stringent in the country, with a high degree of emphasis on quality. Law enforcement agencies who use our academy include Auburn P.D., BART P.D., Berkeley P.D., Davis P.D., Grass Valley P.D., Placer County S.D., Roseville P.D., UC Davis P.D., Rocklin P.D., and West Sacramento P.D.

Basic Information
Students earn college units and a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy Certificate upon completion. We have a highly qualified and experienced full-time staff. Professional instructors from the Sacramento Police Department and outside experts (attorneys, crime scene investigators, paramedics etc.) provide training that is reality based.

Emergency Vehicle Operation Course
A full-time staff of driving instructors provides expert instruction in precision driving, skid pan, pursuit immobilization technique, code-3/pursuit driving.

Gas and Riot Training
Shotgun Training

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 21 years of age upon completion of the academy.
  • 60 college semester units or 90 college quarter units upon completion of the academy.
  • Valid California Driver's License.
  • No felony or misdemeanor convictions that preclude possessing a firearm.
  • Must reside within 35 air miles from the freeway interchange of W-X Streets, 29th-30th Streets within one year of appointment. Those appointed to Police Officer as a result of this examination must pass an annual physical performance test.
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship.

Community Service Officer Training Academy
The Sacramento Police Department has utilized the CSO program for more than 25 years. This experience was translated into the training program by using the knowledge of current CSOs and former CSOs, now sworn officers, as instructors and mentors. The CSO Academy is also used by outside agencies.

  • The Sacramento Police Department Academy in affiliation with Los Rios Community College, will be conducting the CSO training Academy regularly begins each June.
  • The CSO academy is a 7-week program consisting of 280 hours of specific training.

Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (E.V.O.C.) and Self-Defense Training
Our Academy provides classroom facilities for academics and self-defense and an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (E.V.O.C.). The Academy is located at McClellan Park, close to lodging, food and shopping.

Public Safety Communications Training
The Communications Center of the Sacramento Police Department offers a 40-hour Communications Training Officer (CTO) course to all interested public safety agencies in California. Instruction is designed to provide public safety dispatchers with the knowledge and skills necessary to train new employees.
Instruction includes:

  • The adult learning process
  • Communication skills
  • Teaching techniques
  • Performance evaluation and documentation
Fee is $90 P.O.S.T Plan IV.

Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course
The Communications Center of the Sacramento Police Department now offers the 120-hour P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course. This course is a requirement for individuals interested in employment as a Public Safety Dispatcher. This course is offered to employees of public safety agencies in California, as well as to individuals who are not yet hired by a public safety agency.

Fee is $240 P.O.S.T. Plan IV.

Citizens Communication Academy
The Citizens Communication Academy is a 6-hour course presented on two consecutive Thursday evenings. This course is designed to provide Neighborhood Association members with insight into the responsibilities of Sacramento Police Department Public Safety Dispatchers.
